Young Bike Rider Rules of the Road
- Walk bikes to the street before getting on them.
- Look left-right-left when entering the road or crossing an intersection.
- Ride in single file, on the right—with traffic, not against it.
- Always yield to pedestrians.
- Obey traffic signs, signals and pavement markings.
- Use proper hand signals when stopping, making turns.
- Avoid riding at night. If you must ride at night, use head and taillights. Reflectors are not enough!
- Wear bright colored clothing for better visibility.
- Keep your bike in good repair.
The Right Way To Wear Bike Helmets
- Wear the helmet flat atop the head, not tilted back.
- Make sure the helmet fits snugly and does not block vision.
- Make sure the chin strap fits securely and the buckle stays fastened.
- Check the recall link online at www.cpsc.gov/kids/kidsafety/correct.html to make sure the helmet you purchase has not been recalled for defects.

Backover Accidents
With alarming regularity, there are reports of larger vehicles such as pickup trucks, SUVs, and vans being involved in backover accidents seriously injuring young children. To demonstrate visibility problems, a recent television show depicted 26 kids clearly behind an SUV, but out of the mirror views of the driver.
Here are a couple of simple, common-sense preventive steps: Do a walkaround just before you back up; back your vehicle into the garage or driveway so you are able to do a frontal check as you enter the vehicle and that any objects will be more clearly in view as you drive out.
